Automatic heavy-duty vehicle weighing (Weight-in-Motion) systems on Lithuanian roads

Lithuania is taking an important step toward modernizing its road maintenance and control systems: at a meeting of the Seimas Committee on Economics, plans were presented to introduce automatic heavy-duty vehicle weighing (Weight-in-Motion) systems on key national road sections by 2027. These systems will enable real-time monitoring of vehicle weight and the identification of loads that exceed legal limits 🚛

“Our main goal is to improve road conditions. We aim to reduce the number of irresponsible carriers who ignore maximum weight regulations, damage road surfaces, and endanger not only themselves but also other road users,” says Via Lietuva CEO Martynas Gedaminskas.

The planned measures will ensure:

🔹 Longer pavement lifespan by limiting vehicles that exceed permissible loads;
🔹 Data-driven decisions in infrastructure maintenance and planning;
🔹 Increased road safety and more responsible behavior among carriers.

The project is valued at €6 million, and the first phase will include the installation of 10 such systems. This is a significant step in expanding the use of intelligent and automated road control solutions, enabling more accurate identification of overweight violations, better risk assessment, and more efficient road maintenance budgeting.

❗ The project’s implementation will also create opportunities for technology, data analytics, and infrastructure solution providers to contribute to the development and deployment of a modern nationwide road control system. Members of the Transport Innovation Association will be informed about upcoming market consultations regarding technical specifications, public procurement, and other project stages.
