Electric vehicles are gradually gaining a foothold in Lithuania

In recent years, the number of electric vehicles in Lithuania has been steadily increasing: by the end of 2021, 2,502 electric vehicles were registered; in 2022 – 2,900; in 2023 – 4,851; and in 2024 the number had already reached 5,407. Although the growth is not rapid, it is clear that electric transport still has significant untapped potential.

Alongside the development of electric vehicles, the charging infrastructure is also expanding. The number of public charging stations in Lithuania is increasing, they are becoming more powerful and more easily accessible for everyday use.

For residents who have the possibility to charge their vehicles at home and primarily drive in urban areas, an electric vehicle can already mean lower overall household transportation costs.

Additional momentum is provided by government incentive measures, including subsidies for the purchase of electric vehicles and the installation of charging stations for both private houses and apartment building residents.

Despite the growth, electric vehicles still make up a small share of Lithuania’s total vehicle fleet, highlighting a gap between previously set national targets – charging infrastructure is developing faster than the number of electric vehicle users.

However, the potential for further expansion remains significant. As technologies improve and the supply of used electric vehicles increases, they are becoming an increasingly attractive alternative to vehicles powered by internal combustion engines.
